Stained Glass Class

Learn the basics to copper foil stained glass. Topics covered: glass safety, glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, and polish.

As the founder of Funky Glassworks nestled in the serene landscapes of Mountain Home, Arkansas, I immerse myself in the transformative art of glass. Specializing in stained glass, fused glass, mosaics, and traditional glass painting, my work is a vibrant celebration of color, light, and creativity.Glass, with its fluidity and luminosity, captivates me endlessly. Through my craft, I endeavor to not only create pieces of beauty but to also cultivate a thriving glass community. At Funky Glassworks, I invite newcomers into this mesmerizing world through regular classes and captivating demonstrations. It’s my passion to spark curiosity and nurture talent, ensuring that the art of glass continues to evolve and flourish. My studio serves as both a sanctuary for artistic exploration and a gallery where my creations find their home. Each piece tells a story—of meticulous craftsmanship, of bold experimentation, and of the innate beauty found in the play of light through glass. Beyond my studio walls, my art travels the globe, connecting with admirers who share in my fascination with the versatility and allure of glass.Whether it’s the intricate geometry of stained glass, the unpredictable fusion of colors in kiln-formed glass, the meticulous arrangement of mosaics, or the delicate strokes of traditional glass painting, each technique I employ is a testament to my dedication to this ancient medium. Introduction to Fly Tying

Calendar Jan 6, 2025 at 6 pm, runs for 4 weeks

Beginner class to teach basic principles of fly tying. Classes meet one night a week in January for four weeks for two hours each, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Students will tie two each of two different flies at each class, all of which can be used on our local rivers. All tools and materials are provided by the North Arkansas Fly Fishers. A mentor will be available on a one-to-two or one-to-one basis. The class is limited to 10 students.

Registration includes one year membership to the North Arkansas Fly Fishers.

The Language of the River in Dante, Twain, & Joyce

Calendar Feb 4, 2025 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

Rivers forge the language of a place and its people. In this comparative literature seminar, we will explore selected works of Dante, Mark Twain, and James Joyce; tracing their literary connection to rivers, and groundbreaking use of informal, regional dialects. Supplemented with Mary Ann Messick’s History of Baxter County.

*Class dates are as follows: February 4th,11th,18th,25th, March 4th & 18th

 

Instructor BIO:

Matt Powell is a writer and musician. His writing has been featured in Variety, No Depression, Angels Flight—literary west, Community Works Journal, The Happy Music Center, StyleBlueprint, Scanner Zine, Temporary Detective and Emmys.com. He served for five years as Contributing Music Editor for Humor in America, a blog affiliated with the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin. He performs music regularly throughout the area, and you can often catch him at an open mic reading from a classic book.  Matt was born and raised in Southern California, but his roots in Baxter County go back to the 1860s. He moved to Mountain Home in 2021 to be around family roots, nature, and good neighbors.

 

Songwriting Workshop

Calendar Mar 5, 2025 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

In this immersive workshop we will deep-dive into the craft of songwriting. With lessons on song structure, music theory, lyric writing and more, I will provide tools to guide you in writing an original song, with the option to perform at our class concert. All skill levels and styles welcome. 

*Class dates are as follows: March 5th, 12th, 19th, April 2nd, 9th, 16th.

(Due to Spring Break class will not be held on Wednesday March 26th).

 

Instructor BIO:

Matt Powell is a writer and musician. He earned a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he majored in songwriting, and studied guitar performance. His writing has been featured in several publications, including Variety, No Depression, and Emmys.com. He served for five years as Contributing Music Editor for Humor in America, a blog affiliated with the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin. He performs music regularly throughout the area, and has released four EPs of original music with  bands in Los Angeles, including a song placed in the CW show Supernatural. Matt was born and raised in Southern California, but his roots in Baxter County go back to the 1860s. He moved to Mountain Home in 2021 to be around family roots, nature, and good neighbors.
